1864: Confederates evacuated from Atlanta by General Sherman.

The Atlanta Campaign during the American Civil War was an important series of battles in Georgia from May to September 1864. Atlanta had become an important Confederate railroad, supply, and manufacturing centre and a gateway to the lower South. Southern defenders of the strategic city were led by Lieutenant General John Bell Hood. After several months of seesaw battles, Union General William Tecumseh Sherman forced the Confederate evacuation of Atlanta, beginning this day. This Union victory gave U.S. President Abraham Lincoln a boost for reelection in the fall of 1864.
