Born this day in 1900, Indian political leader Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit was one of the world's leading women in public life in the 20th century. In 1953 Pandit became the first woman to be elected president of the United Nations General Assembly. From 1964 to 1968 she was a member of the Indian Lok Sabha (lower chamber of parliament), representing the constituency formerly represented by Jawaharlal Nehru. In 1978 she was appointed the Indian representative to the UN Human Rights Commission.
