Born this day in 1932, Abebe Bikila was an Ethiopian marathon runner who won a gold medal and set an unofficial world record while running barefoot at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. He bested his own record at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, becoming the first athlete to win two Olympic marathons. Bikila was also among the first great long-distance runners from Africa.
