American liberal Democratic politician George S. McGovern was born this day in 1922 in Avon, South Dakota. A onetime history professor and single-term Congressman, he served as a U.S. senator for South Dakota from 1962 to 1980 and was the unsuccessful reformist Democratic candidate for the presidency in 1972. He campaigned on a platform advocating an immediate end to the Vietnam War and a broad program of liberal social and economic reforms at home.
