| George I, born this day in 1660, was the elector of Hanover (1698–1727) and the first Hanoverian king of Great Britain (1714–27). When he became king on August 1, 1714, the country was in some respects bitterly divided. Fundamentally, however, it was prosperous, cohesive, and already a leading European and imperial power. |
