In ancient times the land in this region was fairly fertile, meaning that it was good for growing crops. Because of this, people who had spent their lives moving from place to place in search of food for themselves and their animals were able to settle in one place. They began to practice farming and formed permanent communities. Two of the earliest civilizations were in the Nile Valley and Mesopotamia, the area between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in what is now Iraq. The Fertile Crescent was the setting of Genesis, the first book of the Old Testament of the Bible. It is estimated that early farming and village clusters in the area date to 8000 BC or even earlier. The use of irrigation to provide water for the farming probably followed soon thereafter. The later Greek and Roman civilizations are considered to have descended from the ancient countries of the area. |
