Mockingbirds are known for their ability to imitate the songs of other birds. In addition to its own song, the common, or northern, mockingbird can sing the songs of 39 other birds. It can also imitate the cackling of a hen and the barking of a dog. Where mockingbirds liveThe common mockingbird can be found from the northern United States to Mexico. It also has been introduced into Hawaii. It thrives in suburban areas. Other kinds of mockingbirds can be found in Central and South America. The blue mockingbird lives in many areas of Mexico. Physical featuresThe common mockingbird is about 10 1/2 inches (27 centimeters) long. It has a wingspan of about 14 inches (36 centimeters). Its body is ashy gray on top and paler gray below. Its wings and tail are both marked with white. BehaviorMockingbirds are very active and strongly defend their territory. In fact, they will attack dogs, cats, or even humans whom they see as a threat. Mockingbirds feed on insects, including grasshoppers and beetles. They also eat seeds and berries. Mockingbirds nest close to the ground in the branches of small trees, bushes, or vines. In the summer the female lays four to five greenish blue eggs spotted with brown. |
