(1885–1955), German mathematician. Hermann Weyl's work in mathematics served as a link between pure mathematics and theoretical physics, in particular adding to quantum mechanics and the theory of relativity. From 1913 to 1930 he served as professor of mathematics at the Technische Hochschule in Zürich, where he was a colleague of Albert Einstein. He later taught at the University of Göttingen (1930–33) and the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, N.J. (1933–51). He contributed to the development of differential geometry, the theory of continuous groups, and the philosophy of mathematics. (See also Mathematics.)
