campus covering some 130 acres (53 hectares) in Springfield, Mass. The institution began in 1919 as a division of Northeastern University and had ties to the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). In 1951 it severed its relationships with other schools to become independent. About two thirds of the college's full-time faculty hold doctorates. The academic calendar is divided into semesters. Programs in business and engineering are offered at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Undergraduates can also pursue degrees through the School of Arts and Sciences and through an arrangement with the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences. The law school awards the Juris Doctor degree.

Western New England enrolls about 4,700 students between its undergraduate, graduate, and continuing studies programs. Most students come from the New England and Middle Atlantic regions of the United States. Men outnumber women. Many students choose to live on campus in dormitories or in [LM1] apartments. College life includes lectures, concerts, fraternities and sororities, a radio station, musical and theatrical groups, and a student-run newspaper. Varsity sports teams, nicknamed the Golden Bears, compete in Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. School colors are royal blue and gold.
