public institution located on 340 acres (138 hectares) in Danbury, Conn., 65 miles (105 kilometers) northeast of New York City. It was founded in 1903 and grants associate, bachelor's, and master's degrees. Enrollment consists of about 2,700 full-time undergraduates, 2,200 part-time undergraduates, and 1,300 graduate students. Women slightly outnumber men, and most students are state residents. About 30 percent of the full-time undergraduates live in campus housing. The academic calendar is divided into semesters. Undergraduate areas of study include business, nursing, communications, engineering, medical laboratory technologies, computer science, education, public affairs and services, liberal arts and sciences, and fine arts. Some 25 subjects are offered at the graduate level. About two thirds of the full-time faculty hold doctorates. Extracurricular activities at the university include the student-run newspaper, fraternities and sororities, student government, musical and theatrical groups, international and minority students' clubs, and religious organizations. Varsity sports teams compete in Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. |
