private commuter institution located on 2 acres (0.8 hectare) in downtown Boston, Mass. Founded in 1906 as a law school, it added the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Management in the 1930s. The university grants associate, bachelor's, master's, and professional degrees. Disciplines offered include liberal arts and sciences, law, business, journalism, computer science, dramatic arts, education, human services, engineering, and fine arts. Arrangements between Suffolk and other institutions increase the list of potential majors. Almost all of the university's full-time faculty hold doctorates. The academic calendar is divided into semesters.

Enrollment consists of more than 6,000 students, with the numbers of undergraduates and graduate students being relatively equal. The university primarily serves state residents. Senior citizens can take undergraduate courses tuition-free if space is available. Campus life includes fraternities and sororities, a radio station, a student-run newspaper, international and minority students organizations, and intramural sports. Varsity sports teams compete in Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
