(born 1913), U.S. opera singer. Born in New York, N.Y., Stevens was a mezzo-soprano who studied in Europe and debuted in Prague in 1936. She was a member of the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York City from 1938 to 1964. Among her best roles were Octavian in Richard Strauss's ‘Der Rosenkavalier' and the title role in ‘Carmen' by Georges Bizet. She also made appearances in concerts, on radio, on film, and on television. After retiring from the stage, she became comanager of the Metropolitan Opera Company (1964–66) and later became president of Mannes College. (See also Opera.)
