U.S. military official, born in Warsaw, Poland; fled to Germany 1944 to escape advancing Soviet Army; emigrated to U.S. 1952; settled in Peoria, Ill.; graduated from Bradley Univ. 1958; entered U.S. Army; commissioned 2nd lieutenant 1959; served staff and line assignments, including duty in Vietnam War, until 1975; battalion commander at Fort Lewis, Wash., 1975–77; served with NATO command 1978–81 and 1984–86; chief of the political-military division of the Army 1981–84 in Washington, D.C.; commanding general of Fort Lewis 1987–89; deputy commander of Army in Europe 1989–91; assistant to the Joint Chiefs of Staff 1991–92; commander of NATO 1992–93; appointed chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff by President William J. Clinton in Aug. 1993; stepped down from post in 1997.
