Baker (died 1850); originally published philosophical and theological books; firm headed successively by John Blair Scribner (1850–79), Charles Scribner (1854–1930), and Arthur Hawley Scribner (1859–1932); published such authors as Henry James, Edith Wharton, and Ernest Hemingway; later heads included Charles Scribner (1890–1952) and Charles Scribner, Jr. (1921–95); family also founded Princeton University Press; published Scribner's Monthly (1870–81), later called Century (1881–1939), and Scribner's Magazine (1887–1939).
