(born 1942), U.S. film director. Born in Flushing, New York, Scorsese received his bachelor's and master's degrees from New York University, where he was an award-winning student filmmaker. He taught film at the university, made documentaries, and edited for CBS-TV at the start of his feature film career. He became known for making controversial films that were often graphically violent, such as ‘Mean Streets' (1973), ‘Taxi Driver' (1976), ‘New York, New York' (1977), and ‘Raging Bull' (1980). His other films include ‘After Hours' (1985), ‘The Last Temptation of Christ' (1988), ‘GoodFellas' (1990), and ‘Casino' (1995). He received best director awards from the National Society of Film Critics for his work on ‘Taxi Driver', ‘Raging Bull', and ‘GoodFellas'. In 1997, Scorsese received the prestigious Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute. (See also Directing.)
