(born 1919), longtime football coach at Grambling State College and most winning coach in college football history, born in Baker, La.; son of a sharecropper; played quarterback at nearby Leland College; hired in 1941 to coach at Louisiana Negro Normal and Industrial Institute in Grambling, La.; school later changed its name; ended 1985 season with 329 victories against 109 defeats and 15 ties in 43 seasons; in addition, coached his players through classes at a remarkable 80 percent graduation rate.
