(born 1933), Hispanic American entertainer. Known for her fine dancing and her longevity as a performer, Dolores Conchita Figueroa del Rivero was born on Jan. 23, 1933, in Washington, D.C. She studied at the American School of Ballet, and trained with George Balanchine. Rivera originated the role of Anita in Leonard Bernstein's ‘West Side Story' on Broadway in 1957. More than 30 years later Rivera was getting rave reviews for her performance in ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman' on Broadway in the early 1990s. In the intervening years, Rivera performed in such Broadway shows as ‘Zorba' (1969), ‘Can-Can', ‘Seventh Heaven', and ‘Bye Bye Birdie'. Rivera won a Tony award for Best Actress in a Musical in 1984 and was nominated for several other Tony awards. |
