undergraduate women's college located on 75 acres (30 hectares) in Chestnut Hill, Mass., 5 miles (8 kilometers) from Boston. It was founded in 1911 but did not start offering bachelor's degree programs until 1977. In 1994 the college began developing a master's of education program. Pine Manor enrolls roughly 400 students, drawn from across the United States and from foreign countries. The Pine Manor Language Institute offers various levels of classes for students whose native language is not English. Freshmen and sophomores who do not live with their parents must live in campus housing. The academic calendar is divided into semesters. About 60 percent of the full-time faculty hold doctorates. Pine Manor grants associate and bachelor's degrees in such disciplines as liberal arts and sciences, business, communications, environmental studies, interior design, international relations, visual arts, and health sciences. Students in some majors can elect to pursue teacher certification. All bachelor's degree candidates hold an internship during the senior year. Cross-registration agreements exist with several area colleges, including a dual-degree program with the New England Baptist Hospital School of Nursing. Extracurricular activities at Pine Manor include publications, Model United Nations, academic and career-related clubs, musical and theatrical groups, a campus radio station, and intramural sports. Varsity sports teams compete in Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. |
