British aircraft designer, born in Cheltenham, England; built the first twin-engine bomber, the Handley Page 0/400, one of the largest planes used in World War I; studied at City and Guilds of London Engineering College; turned to study of flight and founded Handley Page, Ltd., in 1909, the first English company devoted solely to aviation; formed Handley Page Transport, Ltd., in 1919 to develop commercial air service; made Halifax heavy bomber for World War II; developed the Victor B.2 long-range medium bomber; was knighted in 1942.
