105-acre (42-hectare) campus in Havre, Mont., 30 miles (50 kilometers) south of the Canadian border. It opened in 1929 and is one of six units in the Montana University System. Enrollment is roughly 1,400 undergraduates and 300 graduate students. Women slightly outnumber men, and most students are state residents. Approximately half of the undergraduates are over the age of 25. Native Americans make up about 12 percent of the student population. The college maintains a limited amount of campus housing, all of which is single-sex and most of which is occupied by freshmen. The academic calendar is divided into semesters. The college grants associate and bachelor's degrees in a range of areas as well as master's degrees in education. Undergraduate fields offered include liberal arts and sciences, nursing, education, business, Native American studies, technologies (including agricultural, automotive, civil engineering, computer, construction, electrical, machine, manufacturing, mechanical engineering, and welding), environmental studies, and drama. About 5 percent of the students pursue advanced studies immediately after graduation. Extracurricular activities include academic clubs, student chapters of professional organizations, a drama group, a student-run newspaper, and intramural sports. Varsity sports teams participate in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. |
