state-supported university providing educational opportunities mainly for state residents. This 240-acre (97-hectare) facility in Greeley, Colo., was founded in 1890 and is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Denver. It was formerly called Colorado State College. Total enrollment is more than 10,000 students, close to 90 percent of whom are undergraduates. Freshmen are required to live on campus. Women outnumber men.

The academic calendar is divided into semesters. Programs of study include arts and sciences, business administration, education, health and human sciences, and performing and visual arts. About three-fourths of the full-time faculty hold doctorates.

The university offers some 70 extracurricular organizations, including fraternities and sororities, performing arts groups, and communications clubs. Sports teams, nicknamed the Bears, participate in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. School colors are blue and gold. Students desiring to venture off-campus often visit Rocky Mountain National Park, which is an hour away from campus.
