public university located on 2,100 acres (850 hectares) in Fargo, N.D. There is also a branch in Bottineau. The institution began in 1890 as North Dakota Agricultural College and has expanded over the years to include a range of offerings at the bachelor's through doctoral levels. Enrollment is some 9,500 students, including some 1,000 graduate students. Men outnumber women, and about two thirds of the students are state residents. Approximately a fifth of the undergraduates are over the age of 25. The university maintains on-site housing, and traditional-age freshmen are required to live on campus.

The academic calendar is divided into semesters. About three fourths of the full-time faculty at North Dakota State hold doctorates. Undergraduate courses are offered by the School of Education and by the Colleges of Humanities and Social Sciences, Agriculture, Business Administration, Engineering and Architecture, Home Economics, Pharmacy, Science and Mathematics, and University Studies. Many of these divisions also contain graduate programs. Off-campus study opportunities are available at Concordia College and Moorhead State University, both in nearby Moorhead, Minn. About 15 percent of the undergraduates pursue advanced studies within a year of graduation.

Some 200 extracurricular activities are conducted at the university, including musical and theatrical groups, intramural sports, fraternities and sororities, publications, and the campus radio station. Varsity sports teams compete in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. ,
