small-town institution occupying more than 120 acres (49 hectares) in Biddeford, Me., about 16 miles (26 kilometers) southeast of Portland. It was founded by the Roman Catholic Franciscan order in 1939 but is not a religiously oriented school. A large number of students, however, are Roman Catholic. About half the students are state residents, and the vast majority are from the New England area. Women greatly outnumber men. Total enrollment is about 1,400, with undergraduates numbering about 900. Undergraduate students are expected to live on campus through their sophomore year unless staying with relatives. The university conducts classes on a 4-1-4 system, meaning two full semesters of four months each with a one-month term between them. The January Term is designed to get students out of their normal routine and broaden their educational horizons. The undergraduate College of Arts and Sciences concentrates on health professions and related sciences, life sciences, business, and education. The University of New England also grants the Doctor of Osteopathy degree and has graduate programs in social work and nurse anesthesiology. About three fourths of the full-time faculty hold doctorates. Sports teams compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Extracurricular options include intramural sports and student government. The school's location makes outdoor activities, such as hiking and biking, popular. |
