land-grant institution founded in 1874 in Elko, Nev., and located in Reno since 1886. The campus covers about 200 acres (81 hectares), contains some on-site housing, and has the state's largest library. The university also owns field laboratories and research areas statewide.

More than 12,000 students are enrolled at the university, about 8,000 of whom are undergraduates. Most students are state residents. The numbers of males and females enrolled are about equal. Minorities constitute about a fifth of those seeking bachelor's degrees. Many undergraduates are over the age of 25.

The academic calendar is divided into semesters. The university grants bachelor's, master's, doctorate, and professional degrees. Courses are offered through the colleges of Agriculture, Arts and Science, Business Administration, Education, Human and Community Sciences, and Engineering and the schools of Journalism, Medicine, Mines, and Nursing. The Center of Environmental Sciences and Engineering recently opened to train environmental scientists. About four fifths of the full-time faculty hold doctorates.

More than 100 extracurricular options exist for students, including fraternities and sororities, performing arts groups, intramural sports, and communications organizations. Varsity sports teams compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (except in football, in which they participate in Division I-A).
