state-supported institution founded in 1957 and one of the youngest major universities in the United States. It occupies more than 330 acres (130 hectares) and enrolls approximately 20,000 students, including about 5,000 graduate students. A substantial percentage of those seeking degrees attend part-time, and many of the undergraduates are over the age of 25. The majority of students are from Nevada, and most commute. The numbers of male and female students are roughly equal. Minorities make up about a fourth of the undergraduate student body. An extensive number of programs are offered at the bachelor's through the doctoral level. The university consists of the Greenspun School of Communication and colleges of Business and Economics, Education, Engineering, Fine and Performing Arts, Health Sciences, Human Performance and Development, Liberal Arts, Science and Mathematics, and Hotel Administration. A general education core is required of all baccalaureate candidates. About three fourths of the full-time faculty hold doctorates. The academic year is divided into semesters. Outdoor recreational activities abound in nearby mountains and waters. On campus, more than 100 extracurricular activities are available, including ethnic and religious clubs, fraternities and sororities, communications organizations, performing arts groups, and intramural sports. The UNLV Rebels compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (except in football, in which they compete in Division I-A). School colors are scarlet and gray. |
