(1903–57), U.S. Prohibition enforcement officer, born in Chicago; became famous for his nine-man team of “Untouchables” in their fight against crime lord Al Capone and others in Chicago 1929–33; graduated University of Chicago; hired by Department of Justice 1929 to operate city Prohibition Bureau; raided breweries, distilleries, and speakeasies, generally harassing Capone's gang and other lawbreakers; two TV series in 1960s and early 1990s, and 1985 film dramatized the events; director of U.S. Department of Treasury's alcohol tax unit 1933–35; director of public safety in Cleveland, Ohio 1935–41; with Federal Security Agency during World War II 1941–45.
