independent, undergraduate institution of interior design in New York, N.Y., founded in 1916. Students can work toward a certificate, an associate degree, a three-year diploma, or a bachelor's degree. Many courses deal with design procedures and problem solving. Others look at the history of the discipline or teach technical and communication skills. Instructors combine their teaching duties with professional careers. The academic calendar is divided into semesters.

The school enrolls more than 600 students, about a fourth of whom come from outside of the state. Women greatly outnumber men. More than 80 percent of the students attend part-time, and many of them are over the age of 25. All students commute to classes.
