(born 1931), Canadian author, born in Wingham, Ont.; known for her intense narrative style and imagery; began writing stories at 15; attended University of Western Ontario, where she later became writer-in-residence; first collection ‘Dance of the Happy Shades' (1968) won the Governor General's Literary Award for fiction; ‘Who Do You Think You Are?' (1978) and ‘The Progress of Love' (1986) also won that award; became first Canadian to win the Canada-Australia Literary Prize 1977; first Canadian nominated for the Irish Times-Aer Lingus Fiction Prize with ‘Friend of My Youth' (1990).
