public institution located on more than 100 acres (40 hectares) in Moorhead, Minn., adjoining Fargo, N.D. Its history traces back to 1885, and at one time it was a teachers' college. University status was obtained in 1975. Moorhead State awards associate, bachelor's, and master's degrees. Total enrollment is more than 7,000 students, including some 125 graduate students. About 60 percent of the students are state residents, and most of the other students are from the North Central United States. Roughly a quarter of the undergraduates are over the age of 25. The campus contains housing for more than 2,000 students. About two thirds of the full-time faculty at Moorhead State hold doctorates. Classes are conducted on the quarter system. Undergraduate fields of study include visual and performing arts, speech, journalism, business and management, electrical technologies, liberal arts and sciences, computer sciences, criminal justice, education, industrial arts, and social work. Interested students can study off-campus at North Dakota State University, Concordia College (in Minnesota.), and other public institutions in Minnesota. Roughly 10 percent of the undergraduates immediately pursue advanced studies immediately after graduation. The university's own graduate programs are in business, education, computer and information sciences, and performing arts. Extracurricular activities at the university include fraternities and sororities, religious clubs, student government, intramural sports, musical and theatrical groups, publications, and the campus radio station. The Moorhead State Dragons compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association. School colors are red and white. |
