state-supported university located on 65 acres (26 hectares) in Huntington, W. Va. Its name honors United States Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall. Though the institution dates back to 1837, it did not achieve university status until 1961. The academic calendar is divided into semesters. About 70 percent of the full-time faculty hold doctorates. The university's Community and Technical College offers an array of programs leading to certificates and associate degrees. Disciplines offered at the bachelor's level include education, communication disorders, criminal justice, counseling, liberal arts and sciences, computer science, home economics, international affairs, mass communications and journalism, park resources and leisure services, safety technology, business, visual and performing arts, social work, nursing, cytotechnology, dietetics, and medical technology. Students interested in forestry can enroll in a dual-degree program set up between Marshall and Duke University. Marshall conducts graduate programs in many of the same areas as undergraduate studies as well as in medicine, biomedical sciences, adult fitness and cardiac rehabilitation, and educational administration. Enrollment consists of roughly 10,000 undergraduates and 2,700 graduate students, most of whom are state residents. Approximately a quarter of the undergraduates attend part-time. Traditional-age students who do not live with relatives must reside in campus housing. University life includes fraternities and sororities, musical and theatrical groups, a radio station, a campus newspaper, and intramural sports. Varsity sports teams, nicknamed the Thundering Herd, compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (except the football team, which participates in Division I-AA). School colors are green and white. |
