(born Belle Aurelia Babb) (1846–1911), U.S. educator and lawyer, born in Burlington, Iowa; first woman admitted to legal profession in U.S.; graduated from Iowa Wesleyan University 1866; taught political science, English, and history at Simpson (Iowa) College and at Iowa Wesleyan; studied law and applied for admission to the Iowa bar 1869; never practiced law but continued to teach at Iowa Wesleyan, where she also earned an M.A. (1870) and an LL.B. (1872); began teaching at DePauw University 1886, where she became dean of the schools of art and music by 1894.
