conservatory in New York, N.Y. David and Clara Damrosch Mannes, a famous violin and piano duo, founded the college in 1916. It awards bachelor's and master's degrees. Disciplines offered include instruments, voice, conducting, composition, historical performance, and music theory. Most of the faculty combine teaching duties with professional music careers. The college is a division of the New School for Social Research, and Mannes students have access to the courses and facilities of other divisions. The academic calendar is divided into semesters.

The conservatory is a selective institution, and only about half of the applicants to undergraduate programs are admitted. All students take an entrance exam in their major field of study. The college considers only students with previous training, not beginners. Mannes enrolls approximately 250 students, many of whom hail from outside of the state. About a third come from foreign countries. The college offers a small amount of housing, and most students commute from neighboring areas. About half of the undergraduates pursue advanced studies directly after graduation.
