(1892–1977), U.S. actor and director. Born in Milwaukee, Wis., Alfred Lunt was a leading man of the American stage for nearly half a century. With his actress-wife, Lynn Fontanne, Lunt was a member of one of the theater's most enduring and exciting partnerships. After their marriage in 1922, the Lunts starred in more than 20 plays together, excelling in sophisticated comedies such as Reunion in Vienna, Design for Living, and O Mistress Mine. The two also starred together in a motion-picture version of The Guardsman (1931). Alfred Lunt died on Aug. 3, 1977, in Chicago, Ill. (See also acting.)
