(born 1922), U.S. TV producer, born in New Haven, Conn.; attended Emerson College; joined U.S. Army Air Force 1942; moved to New York City; worked in publicity firm; to Los Angeles 1946; wrote for comic Danny Thomas; writer for TV's Four Star Review, Colgate Comedy Hour, and Martha Raye Show; writer-director of George Gobel Show; with Bud Yorkin formed Tandem Productions 1959 to produce TV and motion pictures; cowrote Broadway musical ‘The Night They Raided Minsky's'; best-known TV series All in the Family, which featured character of Archie Bunker, premiered Jan. 1971; other shows Sanford and Son, Maude, Good Times, and The Jeffersons; a political liberal, cofounded People for the American Way to promote freedom of expression; named to TV Hall of Fame 1984.
