(1802–73), British painter and sculptor, born in London, Eng.; known for animal paintings; learned drawing from his father and studied at the Royal Academy; paintings of animals based on sound anatomical knowledge and, at first, marked by healthy animation; later works marred by anthropomorphism that lapsed into sentimentality; works include ‘Shoeing' (1844) and ‘Rout of Comus' (1843); did the four bronze lions at the base of Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, London (unveiled 1867); elected to the Royal Academy (1831) and knighted (1850).
