(1849–1909), U.S. author. Born on Sept. 3, 1849, in South Berwick, Me., Sarah Orne Jewett grew up in a seaport town that later provided the source material for her writing. Her first story was published when she was 19, and for years her short stories continued to appear in magazines and in collections such as ‘Deephaven' (1877). ‘The Country of the Pointed Firs' (1896), a portrait of a provincial coastal village, is regarded as her finest work. Her novels included ‘A Country Doctor' (1884) and ‘The Tory Lover' (1901).
