(1832–1907), U.S. engineer and architect. Born in Fairhaven, Mass., Jenney was noted for his innovations in the structure of office buildings. He served as an engineer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. His Home Insurance Building in Chicago (1884–85) was the first with an interior frame supporting an exterior shell. He trained Louis Sullivan, William Holabird, Martin Roche, and Daniel Burnham. (See also Architecture.)
