public institution in Indianapolis, Ind., formed by the 1969 merger of Indianapolis-area programs of Indiana University and Purdue University. Trustees of both universities govern the institution. Degrees are granted by whichever university operates the individual program. The university consists of a main campus just west of the downtown area, a medical center, and a campus hosting the Herron School of Art.

The university features the only medical and dental schools in the state as well as Indiana's largest law school. Other fields of study include allied health sciences, nursing, business, education, engineering and technology, computer sciences, art, journalism, liberal arts and sciences, labor studies, public and environmental affairs, hospitality services, and social work. About three fourths of the full-time faculty hold doctorates. The academic calendar is divided into semesters.

Enrollment consists of roughly 11,200 part-time undergraduates, 9,200 full-time undergraduates, and 7,200 graduate students. Most students are state residents. The university attracts a large number of older students.

Some students reside in on-site housing, but the majority of students commute. University life features some 160 extracurricular organizations covering a variety of interests. The university holds membership in both the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
