public institution covering some 410 acres (166 hectares) in Fort Wayne, Ind. Indiana University has conducted programs in the Fort Wayne area since 1917, and Purdue University established a Fort Wayne campus in 1941. In 1964, the two universities formed a cooperative arrangement and later adopted the present name to reflect that the institution offers Indiana University and Purdue University instruction under a single administration.

Degrees are granted at the associate, bachelor's, and master's levels. Disciplines offered include business, education, general engineering, technological studies, liberal arts and sciences, health sciences, visual and performing arts, public affairs and policy studies, design (industrial and interior), labor studies, and communications. About two thirds of the full-time faculty hold doctoral degrees. The university also employs a large number of part-time instructors. The academic calendar is divided into semesters.

At the undergraduate level, the university enrolls roughly 11,000 students, the majority of whom are state residents. More than half of them attend part-time, and many are over the age of 25. Women slightly outnumber men. Approximately 800 graduate students also attend. All students commute to classes.

Extracurricular activities include a student-run newspaper, a drama group, a few fraternities and sororities, and intramural sports. Varsity sports teams, nicknamed the Mastodons, compete in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (except the men's volleyball team, which participates in Division I). School colors are red and gold.
