Presbyterian institution located on more than 60 acres (24 hectares) in Jacksonville, Ill., 35 miles (56 kilometers) west of Springfield. It was founded in 1829 and grants bachelor's degrees. Enrollment consists of approximately 1,000 students, with the numbers of men and women being relatively equal. Most students are from Illinois. Students are required to live in campus housing through their sophomore year, and many choose to stay beyond that time. About three fourths of the college's full-time faculty hold doctorates. The academic calendar is divided into semesters. Fields of study include business, liberal arts and sciences, computer sciences, fine arts, communications, and education. In conjunction with other institutions, the college conducts programs in engineering, nursing, cytotechnology (a medical specialty in the identification of cells and cellular abnormalities), medical technology, and occupational therapy. Interested students can cross-register at nearby MacMurray College. Many students are part of a work-study program with local schools for the handicapped. About 20 to 25 percent of Illinois College's graduates pursue advanced studies within a year of commencement. The college offers some 40 extracurricular activities, including social clubs (referred to as literary societies), religious organizations, musical and theatrical groups, publications, and intramural sports. Varsity sports teams compete in Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. School colors are blue and white. |
