public institution located on more than 180 acres (73 hectares) in Chicago, Ill. It was founded in 1965 and primarily serves as a commuter campus for state residents. The university grants degrees at the bachelor's through doctoral level. The academic calendar is divided into semesters. About 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold doctorates.

At the undergraduate level, the university enrolls roughly 16,000 students, with the numbers of men and women attending being relatively equal. Minorities make up about half of the undergraduate student body. Disciplines offered include business, liberal arts and sciences, nursing and other health professions, visual and performing arts, architecture, area and ethnic studies, social work, computer sciences, criminal justice, education, engineering and related sciences, communications, and exercise sciences.

Graduate students number about 10,000. The university offers graduate programs in many of the same areas as undergraduate studies in addition to medicine and dentistry. The graduate programs in nursing and pharmacy rank among the best in the United States.

Students have a choice of some 150 extracurricular activities, including fraternities and sororities, publications, musical and theatrical groups, and intramural sports. Varsity sports teams, nicknamed the Flames, compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. School colors are indigo and flame.
