(1721–1803), U.S. theologian and writer, born in Waterbury, Conn.; studied divinity under Jonathan Edwards; ordained in 1743 but dismissed from assignment in 1769 for unorthodox attitudes and reputation as inept preacher; presided as minister of First Congregational Church in Newport from 1770 until death; one of the first Congregationalists to oppose slavery, raising money to free numerous slaves; major work, ‘The System of Doctrines Contained in Divine Revelation' (1793), showed belief in social service and helped expand missionary activity; contended that one must overcome self-love (sin) by disinterested benevolence and by complete submission to God's will.
