Casey 1981; deputy director for intelligence 1982–86; deputy director of central intelligence 1986–87; appointed director of CIA in 1987, was not confirmed by Senate because of Iran-contra scandal; remained as deputy director until appointed director by President George Bush in May 1991 and confirmed by Senate.
