(1850–1931), U.S. sculptor. Daniel Chester French was born in Exeter, N.H., on April 20, 1850. His statue ‘The Minute Man' (1875) at Concord, Mass., commemorates the first battle of the American Revolution. He studied briefly at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but his art was mostly self-taught. His other sculptures included busts or statues of Emerson, Gen. Lewis Cass, Ulysses S. Grant, George Washington, and the marble statue of a seated Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. He also did ‘Standing Lincoln' in Nebraska's capital and ‘Alma Mater' for Columbia University.
