(1877–1958), U.S. industrialist. The founder of the Hawaiian pineapple industry was James D. Dole. Born on Sept. 27, 1877, in Boston, Mass., he moved to Hawaii after graduating from Harvard University in 1899. In 1901 he established the Hawaiian Pineapple Company (now Dole Company) and began producing and marketing mass quantities of canned pineapple. In the 1930s the company was reorganized and Dole was given the honorary title of chairman of the board. He was responsible for such innovations in pineapple growing as paper mulching, motor trucks, and sulfate spray. In 1948 he resigned as chairman of the board.
