In response to the 19th-century tradition of realism in the arts, two insurgent artistic movements that undermined convention emerged in the early part of the 20th century. Dadaism began in Zürich, Switzerland, in 1916, and surrealism evolved from the Paris wing of the Dada movement several years later.
