state-supported institution covering 95 acres (38 hectares) in Athens, W. Va., on a ridge of the Appalachian Mountains. Classes are also offered at various sites throughout the state, including at the Concord College Beckley Center in Beckley, W. Va. The college's origins trace back to 1872 when it was founded as Concord State Normal School on the main road into Concord Church (later Athens), W. Va.

The academic calendar is divided into semesters. About half of the full-time faculty hold doctorates. Concord grants the associate of arts degree in office supervision. Fields of study at the bachelor's level include liberal arts and sciences, computer information systems, social work, education, travel industry management, business, communication, medical technology, and art. Approximately 20 to 25 percent of the students pursue advanced studies directly after graduation.

Concord enrolls roughly 2,800 students. Women outnumber men, and most students are state residents. About a fourth of the students attend part-time. The campus contains more than 1,000 housing spaces. College life includes publications, an artist-lecture series, honor societies, fraternities and sororities, a campus cable-television system, musical and theatrical groups, and intramural sports. Concord belongs to both the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
