(1789–1877), U.S. abolitionist, born in New Garden, N.C.; became teacher, opened Sunday school for slaves in New Garden 1821; devout Quaker, opposed slavery despite Southern upbringing; moved to Newport (now Fountain City), Ind., 1826; made his house into depot on route of Underground Railroad and induced neighbors to contribute food and supplies for fugitive slaves; more than 3,000 slaves passed through; moved to Cincinnati 1847; opened store selling goods made exclusively by free labor; aided freed slaves after American Civil War; in England raised funds for freedmen 1864; delegate to International Anti-Slavery Conference, Paris, 1867; autobiography ‘Reminiscences of Levi Coffin' (1867).
