(born 1947), U.S. writer. Born in 1947 in Baltimore, Md., Tom Clancy was an insurance broker but made the best-seller lists in 1984 with his first novel, ‘The Hunt for Red October'. Clancy created the genre of military thrillers, though the author never served in the military. His second book, ‘Red Storm Rising' (1986), was also a best-seller and was followed by ‘Patriot Games' (1987), ‘The Cardinal in the Kremlin' (1988), and ‘Clear and Present Danger' (1989). Clancy's efforts in the 1990s included ‘The Sum of All Fears' (1991), ‘Without Remorse' (1993), ‘Debt of Honor' (1994), ‘Executive Orders' (1996), and ‘Rainbow Six' (1998).
