(1837?–1873), Modoc Indian leader; Indian name was Kintpuash; “Captain Jack” was name given to him by white people; had some hereditary claims to chieftainship and was considered chief of Modocs for years; attempt to coerce him and his people to return to Klamath reservation from which they had escaped led to a fight in 1872; led 80 Indians in the fight; when U.S. military tried to negotiate, he ordered his people to attack more viciously; eventually captured and hung on orders from President Ulysses S.
